I have sung the praises of the Response 2 several times on this forum, some are probably growing weary of it. But, since you asked...You might want to look up Corey Greenberg's review of the Response 2 in an old "Stereophile," 1992 or thereabouts. Not only does he nail the appeal of the Response 2, but it's a very entertaining read. And I don't think I can add much to what he said, except to tell you that I've had these speakers for 12 years. During that time, 15 or 20 speakers have paraded in and out of my house, but I've always kept the 2s.
They have never sounded "bright" but then, I've never used bright electronics with them. I have heard speakers that were too "bright" and I can't stand that type of coloration.
I listen to mostly rock, pop, classical. The 2s are considered all-rounders. You need a good pair of stands to get the best out of them.
Follow Ups:
Note waht he says about stands, but doesn't say why. Mail him if you can. That's a lot of money for stands.
Forgot to mention...I don't have experience with the speakers you mention for comparison. But I did own the Spendor SP100. These share a similar tonal "rightness" with the ProAc 2. They produce a more weighty sound than the 2, probably a little better for big orchestral music. But I thought the ProAcs were punchier, imaged better and generally were more fun to listen to on all types of music than the Spendor.
The standard from which they are both measured is Harbeth, which is the most neutral of the three throughout their various ranges. Look at the Compact 7.
