I also had this problem on my older computer, so it's not specific to the computer I have now. Plus, when the problem started I was in a different bedroom in this apartment, so it's not so outlet-specific. The one constant, with all other variables, has been that things get screwy when I add a computer to the inputs of whatever also has other things connected - which is why I'm posting it in this forum rather than the amp. or general forum.

This is almost certainly a ground loop issue. The likely reason why it has to do with the computer is because the computer has a three prong plug. If any of the stero components also have a three prong plug its possible to geta ground loop between the ground the computer is plugged into and the one the stereo is plugged into.
Cable boxes are notorious for this because the cable itself is frequently connected to a different ground than the house wiring.
a simple way to test this is to disconnect everything from your computer you don't need for its basic operation (cable modems, DSL modems, printers, phone lines, scanners etc), you should be left with the caomputer box and a monitor. Plug these and all the stereo equiptment into the SAME power strip. Make SURE you don't have the cable box hooked up, it should be unplugged, the cable disconnected and no audio connetions to it. See if you get any hum. My guess is you won't. If your computer (and or monitor) is usually connected to a different outlet than the stereo system, try that and se if you get hum. If not try hooking up the periferals to the computer. If any of these cause hum you know where to look. If its still quiet try the cable box.
Somewhere along the line you hould get the hum back, this should give you a good indication of which device is causing the ground loop.
After you've done that, let us know the results and we can work on a olution to the problm.

OK. Now I understand a bit more.YOu might want to look at the link. There are several products that deal with hum.
The links still don't work - maybe the site doesn't allow them?
Man. When I do a preview and test them, they work fine.Go to www.markertek.com
Then do a search for "ground loop"
...they are dependant on a "cookie" local to -your- computer browser.
