Small band (trio, quartet, quintet) in a live setting. Please recommend some of your favorites. TIA!!!
Follow Ups:
Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown, Verve Master Edition cd. Excellent vocals, with a fantastic backing band. Can't miss IMHO.

Katherine Whalen ( from Squirrel Nut Zippers)
Lavay Smith...
...features her with her regular trio I believe (I don't own it and so can't reference it). That was in addition to Nina on piano, Lisle Atkinson on bass, Robert Hamilton on drums, and Rudy Stevenson on guitar and flute.

Features piano, bass, drums or piano, guitar, bass, drums. On Stompin at the Savoy that latter group is Oscar Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums. Ella in top form, and hard to beat the backing.

Sarah Vaughan Live at Mr. Kelly'sSecond the motion on Mary Stallings Live at the Village Vanguard
Here are a few good ones off the top of my head:Carmen McRae-Live at Bubbas
Shirley Horn-I thought about you (Live at Vine St)
Mary Stallings-Live at the Village Vanguard
Dee Dee Bridgewater-Live at Yoshi's
Ella Fitzgerald-In BerlinThat will get you off to a good start.

Mary Stallings "Live at the Village Vanguard" is probably the best modern recording.
Dee Dee "Live at Yoshi's" is good in part, I wish that Miss Bridgewater would control her excess.
Both of the above have great audio.
Nicole Yarling-Live at the Manchester Craftmen's Guild. Great disk by a veritable unknown.

Dinah Jams, After Hours with Miss D, Dinah! The various sidemen used on these sessions is outstanding. Clifford Brown, Max Roach, Haraold Land, Ed Thigpen, Eddie Davis, Wynton Kelly, to name a few.
don't know what CDs all of this is on, but I remember a superb Travellin' Light.Dee Dee Bridgewater made some nice recordings with her EUropean rhythm section - some may be live. I certainly recommend her studio "Keeping TRadition"

Carmen McRae famously preferred to record live and in small group settings. The best one to me is The Great American Songbook (Atlantic), but other good ones are Live and Doin It (Mainstream), Fine and Mellow (Concord), Live at Sugar Hill(Time), etc. You might also enjoy As Time Goes By- Live at Dug ( Catalyst), a beautiful recording where she accompanies herself on piano. Can't vouch for the availability of any of these on CD, however...
Amongst my favorites although it mixes studio and live settings and the small jazz combos. I'll definitely look into the others you listed!
with the great, and I do mean great, Jimmy Rowles on piano, and Joe
Pass on guitar. It's a must have recording, I think.
Ditto those two Ella records you mentioned; you beat me to it. J Rowles sounded like no one else and IMHO the late 70's was his best period. The same for Joe Pass, who manages, again IMHO, and in spite of his considerable fame and montary success in his time, to be underrated.
Ella in Berlin (Verve), Ella in Rome (Verve. Both excellent.
