You're right, he is promoting his product, and any real entrepreneur would in his position.
Maybe his self confidence is bordering with arrogance at times, but he sure has a lot to show for his work at AIX.I agree that it could be on the DVD-Audiobahn (please make a note of the name),
but I think ZS still has his cookies set to the Highway so he probably posted this here by mistake:)

I did not even make that mistake on purpose.
My chocolate cookies always point me to the vinyl section (still sounds great to me) but I never posted anything about sacd or dvd there (although I still feel guilty [and beaten] that I mentioned something about a cd there...)

I might fall (back) for vinyl this year, if I find a decent TT and phono stage for cheap.
I have hundreds of vinyls I would like to rip.Best
2-3K will get you in the ballpark.
***2-3K will get you in the ballpark.***2-3K seems like an extraordinary price for a TT and a phono stage...
I keep reading posts from inmates who say you can be in business with $500 to $600, on this board even.If that's the price to pay, forget it, I'll just put that on the back burner.

you can spin for $500 but will it compete with your $1K SACD player? not very well. You need to spend about $2-3K to get on even footing. and that is where i see the vinyl crowd being unfair. We keep saying vinyl sounds better instead of saying we invested enough in our vinyl playback system to make it sound better. What we can safely say today that one cannot invest enough in a commercialy available SACD or DVD-A system to make it sound better than the most expensive commercially available analog system. Ask mikel if you do not belive me. On the other hand i can make you a deal :^) I CDR all your records if i can keep them. I pay for shipping and media %^). Deal?
I'll send you my mantovani, james last and 'vader abraham' records right away..
I plan to rip at 24/192 and write to dvd-A, with maybe a 24/96 DVD-V version. If you're interested (and can bear with 1980's pop/rock 12" singles) I think we can come to a deal

I'll Send you a CDR of something.email me your your brick and mortar locator.
Using one of the in PC soundcards will give you no benefits over using a decent CDR recorder, to get the benefits of HiRes you need an outboard AD with SPDIF and and a soundcard that can be clocked from the AD. Then you may get the benefits of HiRes. And if you go to that level of expense you need to to have a turntable that is capable of producing detail that will be captured, blah, blah. Ripping at 192/24 from a Thorens 145 with a grado and ratshack pre is a wate of space. BTW that is what you can get for about $500. You want better sound you start getting into big bucks. I have a Turtle beach soundcard in my PC that is the closest to the stereo but i know that the CDRs i make on the TASCAM CDRW-700 sound better than the files ripped at 96/24 with that card. The analog stage on almost all of those soundcards is trash.
I'm not using anything yet, because I haven't started. But my plan was along the line you described: Thorens or similar TT, good cartridge, and more money into good cables and a decent phono preamp. To be honest, I was thinking of a legacy preamp, something like an old Marantz unit.
The card I have: based on the advice of several experienced inmates (anevsky in particular), I got myself a Lynx 22 (for Christmas :) capable of 24/192 recording on 2 channels. This card has very good technical data, and I can say already that it sounds excellent on playback. The best alternative I had gathered was an Alexis for AD, connected to the PC, but those are hard to find in Europe.
Anyway, I hear you, and it makes sense to use the best possible equipment as a ssource, especially if the ripped recording is to serve as a master. That kind of bugs me of course, because I hadn't planned something dramatic like this, but I guess it's only logical. Damn.
I know several inmates are working on similar projects so maybe we should start some kind of ring/chain on this?
Best
Eric
PS: Next time someone pops up here and says vinyl is great and cheap, he will get flamed.. :)
I was considering one of those but i opted for the convenience of the all in one unit. I am still waiting for something like the Alexis ML9600, to come out with 192/24 ad/da and dvd authoring, soemthing that i can stick in the cabinet with the rest of the stereo junk. As far as i can tell will never see DSD in a writeable form.
