I picked up 5 of the Dylan SACDs at HMV last night, and listened to John Wesley Harding, Highway 61 Revisited, Nashville Syline and Frewheelin' last night. The first three are very good, comparing well with my memory of the vinyl but Freewheelin' is outstanding: I've never heard Dylan's voice, guitar and harmonica recorded so clearly. I listened to Mr. Tambourine Man on Bringing It All Back Home and I'm looking forward to hearing more tonight.
Follow Ups:
Along with "Another Side of" and "Desire". Yesterday I made it through BIABH, JWH and H61R, often singing along, tapping the foot and having a great time. BotT and Nashville Skyline are on the way. Not that I'll get tired of these for a long time, but I wonder what major catalog segment will be coming to hybrid SACD next. After these Dylan titles, Sony will be hard pressed to outdo itself.
Too bad you can not compare it directly to the vinyl! I will be waiting for some one to do, before I get them.
But thanks!
Patrick
Freewheelin' and Bringing It all Back Home- I have recently gotten the Sundazed mono LPs. Sometime over the weekend, I will compare these to the SACD versions. I also have a new 180 gm Columbia pressing of John Wesley Harding, which I will also compare.First opinion of Blood on the Tracks: it sounds very good in the SACD way, but the acoustic guitars do not have that glistening realism and organic quality that I only get (so far) from LP. Based only on my own equipment, not meant as a general rule, of course.
The Steve Hoffman remastered (and remixed) CD is amazing. Hard to find but worth it!! Better than any LP version I have heard (and FAR better than the Sundazed mono, though the problem with that one was apparently in the original mono mix).
Steve Hoffman did not remix Highway 61 Revisited.
With an additional format to listen to (being vinyl), it makes for an interesting decision. No, I cannot afford both so maybe I'll pick a few LPs and a few SACDs.Now I have added another predicament for my budget. RC Racing!! Yipes!!!
If the Columbia is like my Highway 61 Revisted 180 gram (about 2-3 years old), then you will be disapointed. My Dylan Columbias were dismal at best. Out of all of them that I bought (180g Columbia reissues), I think only 2 or 3 were what I would call good, the rest, oh well. I bought Moby Grapes first lp, it was so bad, that my cd version sounded better, and I am a dihard vinyl addict.
I've listened to it a couple of times. But the situation is very confusing because it is certainly being played on a system that is orders of magnitude better than any I ever heard it on in the past...and therefore it is sounding far better than I ever realized it could. My sense is that the original recording is not all that great...this is why the comparison with the SACD will be interesting. The Sundazed mono Freewheelin' is however extremely vivid and lifelike on vinyl. I'd be surprised if the SACD lands close to that one.
Tunenut, More likely, this is just a great recording, because the SACD is outstanding.
I listened to Freewheelin, Another Side of, and Desire last night. Of the six I've heard, Freewheelin has the best sonics by a significant margin. Desire sounds very good in terms of the instrumentation but the voices sound a bit hot and distorted. I also notice not all these SACDs are in the same "polarity" due, no doubt, to how they were recorded and/or mixed.
I picked up JWH, Blonde on Blonde, Highway 61 and Desire.JWH and Highway 61 sounded the best to me, but here's the strange thing. They all sounded a little "veiled" so I tired a CD treatment liquid (Discsolution) which I usually don't even bother with. It had far more impact on these cds than others I tried.
I'll have to get my buddy to bring over some of his cleaner. I could use my LP cleaner, but I'm not sure that's wise.
I purchased Highway 61 from Best Buy Tuesday, placed it in my SCD-C555Es, and it began to skip on the first track. Optrix immediately solved the problem of visible residue on the disc. Are liquid cleaners still taboo...or is that only on the early German SACDs?
JWH was the worst recording compared to Highway 61 (the second-worst) and BIABH (the best of the three). It's too bad because JWH really has special meaning for me.
Most interesting! The Sundazed " B/B " ishould be the best thing next to the original mono.
So tell us with Jim as soon as possible your opinion on this!
but I don't know when I'll get the time.
Let us know ! I wonder if they will reach the quality of the viny, I can imagine that on some they may beat them.
