My SO likes white noise at night so we have a humidifier going all the time. Is this kind of really low level exposure harmful?-TMT
Follow Ups:
At my work, there is a constant white noise level around due mostly to the HVAC in the ceiling, but also from computer/equipment fans. The level is higher in the lab than in the office. Sometimes it seems oppressive, like a sort of audio-claustrophobia, like it's a constant pressure on my ears. Is this kind of noise harmful if I'm constantly exposed to it ~9 hours a day?
It is frequency related. Check with a doctor or audiologist. I worked for years in a room with an ambient level of 57db but it was created by as many as 20 cooling fans in racks and audio equipment. Long exposure to high frequency even at low level may not be a good thing.Steve
There are different norms for different kinds of noise. For the kind of noise you refer to the norm in this country (Sweden) is 84 dB(A). I doubt you humidifier is that loud, so I don't think you have to worry about it. Low-level, contant noise can also cause stress and fatigue, but the threshhold is much lower than 84 dB(A) (around 75 dB(A) ).
