Checked out the link posted by pilot232, I am able to:1) Modified the output stage - bypassing all the unnecessary pieces so the DA chip directly drives the RCA connector with a single high quality capacitor in the signal path.
2) Re-align the laser.
Skipping and sensitivity to CDs is now history. The music takes on characters of high-end CD Player. The deepest bass is the weak point at the moment, and I think it's due to the power supply not stiff enough. I should think about modifying the power supply.

is the realignment of the laser easy? is a feature only found on this unit?
Here is link to replacement parts for the playstation 1, including new laser modules, power suppiles and used consoles with new lasers installed.

The service procedure to align laser is via electrically setting the current, voltage and gain to compensate for the aging. However, serious mechanical misalignment, or more typically, CD loader worn due to heavy playing (you will see that the plastic rail physically loosing 'teeth') cannot be fixed via the electronic method. The procedure is in one of the URL buried in the DIYAudio link posted by Pilot232.
