Awacs,
Great review, but I didn't get what I waited for .. and that was your comments in regard to the Benchmark DAc1!
I'd love to hear more on this comparison.

I think you once posted that you like detail, transparency, etc. That sounds like the Benchmark. You might like it a lot.

Awacs,
Yep , that's me and I have a Benchmark and love it. Actually in my system, which is very resolving, the Benchmark sounds great. I was wondering if a step up to the Saturn would actually be a step up in performance or just a step sideways.

Gotcha.I can't imagine the Saturn being much more detailed than the DAC-1. Only one way to find out, though. If you audition the Rega, please post. What types of music do you listen to?
Hey Mr. B -I'd love to, but I'm not sure I'm up to it. As I said, I'm not trained in audiophile type analysis. In this case, I think it would help.
I say this because the DAC-1 is damn good, but the Saturn beat it all around. At first, I thought the Saturn went deeper in the bass. After going back. I'm not sure that's true. But the Saturn has MUCH punchier bass, and I could swear there's a big frequency band that the DAC-1 sort of swallows up, whereas the Rega fills the room with it.... but again, my lack of ear-to-frequency-translation experience doesn't help me explain this to you. Maybe it's in the mid bass, but I don't have an SPL meter, so my Stereophile discs won't help me here. So, ok, the Saturn's bass is much better.
Both are very detailed - definitely a strong point of the Benchmark - but the Saturn throws not just a bigger soundstage, but one that seems *fuller* to me. Does that make any sense? In my room, the Rega also threw a noticeably bigger soundstage. I think the Saturn is a little more up front, as well. Mids on both are excellent, but the Saturn - a little warm, maybe - is just that much more satisfying. Excellent treble from both.
For intangible stuff - presence, ability to fill a room, etc. - the Saturn really smacks the Benchmark around, hard. And the DAC-1 is a damn good piece of audio equipment, to my ears.
I've been trying not to say PRAT. OK, I give. PRAT. Pretty good from the DAC-1. Wow (I acutally wrote, "wow" in my notes) from the Rega. This is just me, ok? With my system and my taste, the Saturn sounds really musical.
