for the LintonThis is a review of the Wharfedale Linton speakers released recently. Please also see the review (https://www.stereophile.com/content/wharfedale-linton-heritage-loudspeaker) by Herb Reichert. His review influenced my interest in these speakers.
I have listened to and owned a number of speakers (AR, Polk, Magnepan, Epique) and auditioned speakers ranging from Klipsch to B&W. Of course, I have not heard all of these speakers in the same listening space, so comparisons are difficult to make.
However, I am very pleased by the Linton's. Herb appears to have found them very balanced, as do I. They have full bass response (though I have an existing subwoofer setup that I am keeping for now). Midrange is liquid (as they say) and hi's are detailed, but never shrill. Imaging is quite impressive, with soundstage extending on some recordings beyond the left and right visual image of the speakers themselves. Dynamic range is also quite good and they're easy to drive with a vintage McIntosh 240 power amplifier.
The Linton's do very well with large orchestral music, but with more intimate chamber and jazz music, it's possible to "get inside" the performance in ways not every speaker seems (to me) to allow. Better resolution recordings are particularly rewarding when played through the Linton's.
The Linton's are also quite attractive, well finished and handsome on their stands. Decide in advance where you want them go; their stands do slide, but the setup is fairly heavy. (I do have to add that the Linton's are lovely when viewed with a vintage tube amplifier.)
I have been rediscovering my music collection, a process I am enjoying immensely, thanks largely to the Linton's.
I have not experimented with speaker cables; I am using Mogami cables (which I like very much and have good connectors).
In sum, I find these speakers resolving and very satisfying musically.
These speakers are a remarkable value, with clarity, balance, and imaging I associate with multi-$0000 speakers. I recommend an audition. And do read Herb's review.
Product Weakness: None to date. I do worry about their finish, which one is not supposed to clear with any commercial preparations. Product Strengths: Frequency response, balance, imaging, detail, and "heft." Associated Equipment for this Review:
