Recorded digitally in 1981, this is a true demonstration disc. The Shchedrin reworking of the Carmen suite for strings and percussion may not please the purists, but this is undoubtedly extremely pleasant listening. The percusssion, almost every type you can imagine is utilized and to great effect. The tympani is as good as I've heard anywhere.
The other great Shchedrin-Carmen is by the Boshoi Theatre Orchestra in the late 1960s. This is also great sound and worth getting. Comparing the two Gramophone said:
"Schwarz is warmer, more relaxed and smiling, and he secures splendid playing from the strings of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. The new digital recording is superb, resonantly rich and sparkling, truly demonstration-worthy. I fancy, in spite of any objections from purists, that this record will feature in many a demonstration booth in audio exhibitions, this year. Certainly, without preconceptions, this is very entertaining when the recording is so rich and brilliant, with glittering percussion. But it has its element of vulgarity too, so be warned. I.M."
Link to music below. Great tympani at about 4 minutes.
