I'm pretty sure it uses the original Philips CDM-01 assembly. It's a very robust (overbuilt!) unit mechanically, but when the laser goes, you're SOL.
Here's some of the other players which might serve as donors for the laser:
Marantz CD34 CDM1
MARANTZ CD54 TDA1540 CDM 1
MARANTZ CD73 SAA7000/10 SAA7020 2xTDA1540 CDM1 (can be dodge)
MARANTZ CD74 SAA7000/10 SAA7020 2xTDA1540 CDM1
MARANTZ CD80 TDA1541 CDM1/mkII(CDM4.19) single opamps
MARANTZ CD84 TDA1540 CDM1
MARANTZ CD85 CDM1/mkII
MARANTZ CD94/mkII TDA1541 CDM1
PHILIPS CD-101 TDA1540 CDM1
PHILIPS CD-104 TDA1540 CDM0/CDM1
PHILIPS CD-300/303 SAA7210 SAA7020 2xTDA1540 CDM1
PHILIPS CD-304 TDA1540 CDM1
PHILIPS CD-304 MkII (alu chassis) SAA7210 SAA7220P/A TDA1541 CDM1
PHILIPS CD-880 TDA1541 S1 CDM1 mkII
PHILIPS CD-882 CDM1 mkII//691.20449
PHILIPS CD-960 TDA1541 CDM1/mkII ??? NE5534
I bought my McIntosh MCD7007 new, and it's been played fairly frequently (at least weekly) ever since i bouth it with no problems (mostly I listen to LP's). I had a scare last year when I found it skipping on some CD-R's but a cleaning of the lens with a camel-hair brush restored it to full functionality.
As I'm sure you've found, it's a pretty nice sounding player: the CDM 1 and the DAC chip in this TDA1541A are thought to be among the best sounding of the early players. in fact, the 1541 is having a resurgence among the non-oversampling crowd, if you check you the DIY digital audio forums.
Hope this helps!
Frank
