I've got several WE and NU 350B in my possession right now, and I don't observe what you've observed. My WE and NU 350B both have getter wires on the same side and different side, and it appears the difference is more a function of vintage. The glass sounds different from tube to tube but is not consistent with the branding (ie, two NU can "ping" differently, a NU and WE can sound the same, etc.). Glass shape can vary from year to year within the same brand, and this effects the pitch of the "ping."
I can't comment on differences in durability as both have performed flawlessly for me.
