Dan posted my 26 schematic with two 156C in series. This works very well sonically, except that the 156C are prone to hum pickup, so it's safer to use an interstage, There is no step-down with this design because all the gain is used in the amplification chain - it was designed to feed a 4P1L > 300b amp, giving an all-DHT system. If you go to Bartola website you'll find 26 designs including with active load. All the details of how to build a 26 preamp is on a huge thread on DIY Audio called "26 pre amp". Several people have now built 26 designs like this, and love the dynamic and detailed DHT sound.
