Upon return to the dealer the MA6300 was checked and determined to be operating properly.I cannot recall on what forum(s), but several months ago (long after my review) I read posts from two other audiophiles who mentioned the same aggressive brightness that my unit possessed.
I still enjoy my MA6500 immensely, but in the room where the MA6300 was intended to be used, I settled on a Quad 99 preamp and Quad 909 power amp (connected with a Blue Jeans 1694A interconnect cable). Rave reviews by two writers from the Absolute Sound prompted me to try the Quads. The Quads are absolutely terrific, and provide very similar sonics to my MA6500, with even better user features (e.g., remote control of balance and tone "tilt," and an LED volume display). In fact, I'm not sure which sounds better, the McIntosh or the Quads. At about $2300 for the two units combined, the Quads are a ridiculous steal. In hindsight, I am glad the McIntosh MA6300 was a big disappointment.
