Accuphase A30 + Tube Pre vs Accuphase E550

George, I hope you read this and are willing to post back. I currently live in Tokyo and have an Accuphase A30 amp. I love its sweet and smooth sound, but I would like to get a little more transparency. I currently am using a VAC Standard Mark II Tube preamp.

My question is would I be better off if I purchase a used Accuphase preamp such as 2400 or older to use in place of the VAC. Or would I get more resolution from trading in my A30 and paying the difference for the E550. I think both routes would cost about the same.

I'm not that concerned with ability to play loud. However, I am concerned with sound quality at low volumes. I primarily listen to Jazz and Vocal, and have a small room in an apartment. So while ultimate volume is not a priority, a top-to-bottom transparent sound is my priority.

I really appreciate any opinions or help I could get. Trying to get help here in Japan at the audio stores when I don't speak Japanese is next to impossible.
