Inmate Central, where civil and family-friendly discourse about off-audio topics (other than religion and politics) is welcome.

My local Walmart and a couple grocery stores tried that...

...and it rapidly "disappeared". They went with a single staffed register (for ADA reasons), and all other lanes were converted to self-checkout, with a single "monitor" staff member to oversee a half-dozen automated lanes.

Customers were frustrated, and "shrinkage" rates went through the roof--merchandise was literally walking out the doors at record levels.

The solution?--they put a "monitor" at each self-checkout lane--essentially a cashier at every lane, but they didn't ring or bag your merchandise for you. They were paid just to watch you and/or assist you if something didn't scan properly.

That's when customers got really pissed. These employees are being paid to stand there like watchdogs while you (the customer) were doing 90% of what used to be their job.

The concept didn't last long...

"And today is for sale and it's all you can afford. Buy your own admission. The whole things got you bored. Well the Lord chooses the good ones, and the bad ones use the Lord"--a very dear friend for decades Michael Stanley (Gee)--RIP
