You are right about 'belief' being a prime reason for betraying one's country and becoming a spy. American spies in the 1930s and 1940s were primarily motivated by ideological sympathy with communism, an alleged 'worker's paradise'. Because many people on the left had issues with capitalism and American politics. There was strong flirtation with Marxism and recruitment into the Communist party (under control by Moscow of course). British spies like the 'Cambridge Five" had similar motivations. They had resentments against their home country and belief that the Soviet system was somehow better.

Maybe Comrade Chris was badly mistreated in his youth, or fell out of his cradle as an infant? Hard to tell about these things. In any case it's clear that he has hatreds against American culture and its capitalist foundations. Chris has said as much in his many posts.

American spies for Russia in recent decades have been different. They've mostly been motivated mostly by money. Russia was more than willing to pay for the services of John Walker, Aldrich Ames, Ronald Pelton, and Clyde Conrad.

Comrade Chris appears to be a throwback to the old days. Motivated more by ideology than money. But it's hard to tell... I wouldn't put it past Comrade Chris to be taking money for his zealous pro-Russian posting in this forum.
