My take:
1 sugar cube
1 bar spoon water
3-4 dashes Angostura bitters
3 oz rye whiskey
Ice
Garnish- orange wheel, fancy cherries.
Muddle sugar cube, water and bitters (inhaling the aromatics makes this my favorite step). I let the sugar cube soak up the bitters before adding water and muddling.
Add rye whiskey and stir (bourbon works, too, but Pikesville Rye is what I've settled on)
Add ice and stir again- I use one large cube
Garnish- orange wheel (you can also express the peel and rim the glass with it), Woodford Reserve bourbon cherries (cheaper alternative to Luxardo)
