While packing up to move, I decided to thin out my collection of speakers and amplifiers. In my basement storage, I found a Yamaha RX-V870 receiver and decided to sell it. When I hooked up to a pair of old PSB40 speakers, the left channel was very weak and had static. When the volume or balance pots were moved, static occurred. Also, the bass wasn't very tuneful.I decided to start with just cleaning all the switches and pots with Deoxit D5 and waited to see what happens. As it turns out, that's all the receiver needed. All the distortion and static were gone,,and the left channel gained full volume. It's so nice when something this simple solves all the problems. This happened once before with a Harman Kardon HK 730 receiver.
I only use the Yamaha for 2 channel operation, even though it is an older surround sound unit. I was also impressed when I noticed that Black Gate and Elna capacitors were used. The sound is very clear with no emphasis in any frequency band. The PSB40 speakers were also very clear but had slightly bloated base that could be more tuneful. I am now keeping the Yamaha RX-V870 as a backup to my Yamaha CR-2020 receiver.
I was disappointed when I first hooked the the Yamaha and the PSB speakers, as I had a previous excellent experience with a Yamaha R-v1103 receiver and Bose 301 series III speakers without any service at all. I sold the Bose and R-V1103 for $110 to a guy who wanted them for his shop. The Bose was excellent to my ears using a CD by jazz artist Lynne Arriale.
