A preamp is like the control section of your amp. The word came from hifi separates, also known as stereo components. The phono cartridge, mounted on your tonearm, is connected to the preamp, which is connected to the power amp, which is connected to your speakers.
The low level of a magnetic phono cart needs preamplification before it can go to a power amp. The preamplifier equalized the signal from the cartridge/pickup and had the needed gain and tone controls and sometimes more controls. If you have heard about low output moving coil cartridges, they even need a prepreamplifier, or head amp, or step-up transfoermer, before the preamp. This hobby can get more fun as it gets more complicated. Trust me, it can be fun...
