Try googling to get a service manual. There are a number of updates that Quad made to the FM4, during its production run. They have them detailed in the service manual. You could buy an original from Quad of course. Their prices are quite reasonable. The manual is about 50 pages.Quad do not suggest a powered antenna, nor a dipole type with the FM4. Notwithstanding that I am using a Magnum Dynalab Silver Ribbon, which is a dipole with mine w/o problems. I can pick up PBS in Buffalo NY across the lake from Toronto. Others have had better reception with the ST2. No problem with adjacent stations at all, although I am not near tall downtown buildings.
The fact that it is your signal strength that is low as opposed to selectivity problems might suggest there is something wrong with the front end of your FM4 that you might want to check out.
By the way, in terms of reviews, have a look at the Vintage article in the Absolute Sound back in issues 45 and 51 by Lennice Werth and Walter Bender of Audiomart. Commentary by H. Pearson. They had a mini review of the FM4, and found it just a shade behind the top tuners, they reviewed. Their word for the tuner as I recall was Musical.
If you email me, I should be able to scan the schematic for you.
