try asking at the fmtuners forum on Yahoo. Every tuner fanatic that's listened to all those tuners is up there.I'm using Kenwood Kt 7500 and the sound quality rivals cd sound. The Kt7500 because they're easy to get fairly inexpensively with good cosmetics.
I also have a Sansui TU 717 that would equal it with mods but will most likely sell it as I've had it so long. It's a rare one in excellent condition and looks very nice. It sounds like crap though compared to the modded Kenwood I use. So you're on the right track. Get a vintage tuner and have it modded, the sound quality improves immensely. I pulled the TU717 out of my system after 5 minutes as I couldn't take it anymore.
