Home Radio Road

Which tuner to get and getting the most from it. Thank God, for the radio!

I made a paper template for both sides of the case and cut out a paper and heavy duty aluminum foil insert which I taped into place. The paper isolates any shorts from the foil. The test is hold the radio up to your computer monitor before and after and note how effective is the shielding.

As to the antenna, a great improvement. Do not attach any wires to the headphone plug ground, as advocated by others, it's clunky and will affect the headphones. Instead, when you open up the unit solder a thin wire , use magnet wire or wire wrap (32 guage I think), to the jack ground. Notch the smallest cut in the side of the case next to the jack and bring out about 3 feet of wire, the last inch is not insulated, which you wrap about the case and tape in place. Should still clip to belt. When you want that extra reception uncoil the wire and drape it as needed or even better use another wire, as long as you wish, with an alligator clip attached to clip on to the radio's wire.

I've modified this too many times. It's so cheap order extra parts from Digikey and experiment. Don't try to use it in the car. Someone was raving about Bose but when he heard this little gem he said "it sounds like they're right next to me." I just gave him the radio. Quite a bargain for him.

I've used Senn 600 headphones with the Sony and it sounds just as great. Note I've modified some great vintage tuners, Sansui 9900 and old FT101A, and this little 59 does sound truly awesome for $15.
