Which tuner to get and getting the most from it. Thank God, for the radio!

I have lived in the SF Bay area for 30+ years now-
Listening mostly to the left end of the dial-
well except for the '90s when KFOG was playing 'album rock'...
and by and large the quality of broadcast has been quite good (at the left end...)
I pulled out an old tuner (MR-77) that I wanted to check before sending off to a friend, hooked it up and went across the dial -

WOW - two christian stations!, and lots of dead spaced between stations- as well as a couple of major (we they were...) over broadcasting!
it certainly has gone down hill
