Just to update this thread, I discovered after several hours of work that the schematic available online doesn't quite match my tuner. It looked the same initially, but there are significant differences in the muting circuitry. The muting/stereo function is especially complex in this model, and I simply can't troubleshoot it without a good print. Oddly, the PCB pictorial view matches my unit; only the schematic is wrong. If the circuit was simpler, I might be able to use the pictorial itself, albeit with a lot of extra work. Oh well, off to eBay for a "parts or repair" sale. It's really good cosmetically, so maybe someone can use it. Meanwhile, I've pulled an old tube tuner from the '60s out of the garage and installed it in my system. My initial impression is that it sounds better than the Luxman, so I guess this solves the problem.
