I'm trying to help a friend get a Sony 5000F tuner working again after years in storage. I am a professional electronics tech.
It would not power on at all, and the fuse was good, so I correctly suspected the power switch. It's a weird power switch arrangement that uses a rotary switch purely as a mechanical device to operate a plastic reed switch screwed to a bracket next to it. I managed to get contact cleaner into the reed switch and work the switch back and forth. That cleared it, but then I put the covers back on and went to test FM reception. It's stopped working again.
Anyone dealt with this before? Will I have to resort to replacing the reed switch?
