RE: What are the popular tubes for a phono preamp?

MM or MC?
for MM, the 12AX7 has been a favorite, as one tube can provide sufficient gain for a MM cart.
if you want to address the phase reversal (from a single gain stage) following it with a 12AT/AU7 is a well worn path

Alternatively, you could use 2 6DJ8 (to get the gain for a MM cart), or 6SN7, though you will also need two

there are also other variants and alternatives-

However the bigger question is are you using the twin triodes to handle L & R signal, or 1st & 2nd stage for one channel?
for MC circuits, making the gain circuit quiet is more of a challenge...
