The 220K resistor to which its connected in each channel is why it works.
You only need a regular linear taper 500K pot for this. The wiper is grounded. No idea what the schematic is trying to depict, but any additional tap would be useless. Its a good idea to ground the body of the control though, which might be what that fuzzy schematic is trying to say.
