In a cathode follower the higher the impedance in the cathode circuit, the more local current feedback the stage has to work with. This reduces the distortion and lowers the output impedance.
There are limits to the value when using a resistor in the cathode circuit of a cathode follower. Too large and the current through the tube will be cutoff.
A choke has a low DC resistance and a high AC impedance so with a choke in the cathode circuit the cathode follower can have more local current feedback to work without biasing the tube current to off.
