I think you need to learn how to read schematics if you want to scratch build, so I did that early on. It is relatively easy compared to learning the theory. But it is not necessary to know the theory to read a schematic. It's great if you do, but by no means mandatory. If you start out with one of the kits that are available today that can help too.
I think it would be a shame not to welcome everyone who wants to learn to make their own equipment from scratch or kits. We need all the folks we can get if this hobby is not going to die out. Used to be you could order kits from heathkit with very good directions and a resonable price. Too bad they are not still around, but there are some available from other sources like bottlehead.
I agree that asking questions should be cool no matter what the level of expertise of the person asking. If someone thinks it is too simple to bother with, they can move on to the next post. There are usually enough kind souls around who enjoy helping others to fill the need.
