Hi.Read up "self-capacitance of coils" & "winding capacitance" in Radiotron Designers Handbook, (4th edition). You'll also find how self capacitance can be measured & calculated.
So you want me to give you the answer of the quiz w/o first answering it?
(1) Yes, you are in the right direction: self capacitance btween the turns reduces the Q of the coil. The proper way of winding a coil & the choice of winding wire material also help reducing the self capacitance of the coil. To obtain highest inductance possible for a given Q value, without need to go for costly metal core material &
large coil winding, which raises the building cost of the the CM choke, the self capacitance got to be minimized. It is the INDUCTANCE of the coils of the CM choke that reduces or effectively prevents the common modes noises passing into the load, e.g. our audio gears, via the CM choke.
Enough hint now, anawer my quiz.
(2) Of course, the elelctrostatic force btwen the coil & the earth is much much lower than the same beween adjusnt turns. So the effect is surely lower.
That said, even our body is a handy source of electrostatic or capactive coupling let alone our mother earth. Hence ground planes serving as a Farady shield are needed to stop electrostatic coupling for ultra-high frequency electronics.
A word of advice:- More knowledge in theory helps DIY practical works. One may spend decades in going the motion of soldering amps.
So what? Without the right theory knowlege, how good can the amp sound?
