Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

really need to work on facts before posting

Ok, try not to take offense at all this (not trying to be personal attack) but here goes:

Most of your posts in this thread are rife with errors. you're not adding to the body of knowledge, you're only confusing people who aren't up to speed on this stuff already. Do some more research and reading (actually, alot more) before endlessly posting about this sort of thing - it will do yourself and us a favor. I appreciate your interest in all this, but these sorts of posts in this thread are simply not helping further the body of knowledge, but only muddling things for people who search the archives later.

Most (all?) IDH tubes don't use tungsten for heaters. Oxide coated filaments are not generally built on tungsten substrate. It's more often nickel or nickel alloys. IDH tubes use nichrome or other alloys for the heater, not tungsten. Thoriated tungsten is considered a dull emitter. Very few if any tubes you are going to encounter have un-thoriated filaments. Early uv-201 types and a very few others possibly.

There are so many other numerous misstatements and expoundings on various things that are either wrong or partly wrong I can't begin to cover them all here. These are fascinating topics, no doubt, but endlessly posting stream-of-consciousness thoughts on it all ... just seems pretty pointless esp. when many of the 'facts' are wrong.

whew. sorry for ranting. This really is an interesting topic that I share interst in as well, however for any and all 'rules' you come up with to try to categorize this knowledge, there are endless exceptions. IN many cases it's not worth bothering to try to categorize the knowledge and condense it (e.g. what tubes have what types of filaments, or what the substrate is for a given oxide-filament, for example) but simply to read and understand as much as you can rather than trying to (prematurely) draw any sort of conclusion from it all.

FWIW,
-Ed
