My own experience with R2R was very limited (a Sony) but I had multiple cassette decks over the years.
To the subject here, one member of the San Diego Music and Audio Guild had a Pioneer RT-707 among his source components and often bragged about its playback qualities. Along with a couple other Guild members I had a chance to visit his home to audition it. I will admit to being impressed. The soundstage seem so large and enveloping, a bit closer to what must have been original performances.
So when I happened upon this brief review I found it interesting it matched the memories of my experience a dozen+ years ago.
