I have bought heavy machines from as far as Australia, and recently a 200lb beast shipped to me from Switzerland - and in all cases the shipping was not crazy.
Refurbishing can quickly exceed this, as a good technician is going to charge $150 an hour, and any serious job will take at least several days. I think Myriad charges $10-12K to refurb your machine, and that is base price, without doing any upgrades.
But you don't need to buy an Ampex to get good sound - that is the good news.
