I am pretty stunned by how great it sounds. No hiss, excellent tone all the way through the frequency spectrum, and excellent dynamic range even playing at 3.5"/sec (like me ;)
Maybe Pioneer used different transistors that don't corrode so easily vs. the 707s? I brought the voltage up slowly over a few hours on the variac today and it really sounds great.
Still need to do head cleaning and the demag. Maybe I will buy a component replacement kit for this, a fairly complete kit is $160 on the bay including some transistors. One issue with those kits however is there is no way to know if the components are authentic manufactured or cheap knockoffs from China. And the cost is probably double vs. if I just created a project on Mouser myself.
I can do the component R&R, I've gotten pretty good at that over the years and have excellent soldering and desoldering tools. But my problem is the machine will likely need electronic adjustments which I an mot competent to do, so I may leave the rebuild for the next owner...
The haze on the faceplate is from cleaning; a bit of water should remove it. The kid years ago pencilled a message on the faceplate. That is what I get for leaving it in reach of a 6 year old :(
I should sell it really. It needs a rack - which I do not have - but no way I would expect to ship it without destroying it, so it would need to be local pickup in Sin City...
