Just got my first $450 tape from Acoustic Sounds.

It's Oliver Nelson's "The Blues and the Abstract Truth," a jazz classic from 1961. Featuring such stalwarts as Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy, and Bill Evans. Many (most?) of you would call the price way too high and dismiss the whole idea. The rest of you might be interested in what I found.

For starters, the packaging is almost as exquisite as the music and the sound quality. The package includes two tapes, weighs a ton, and occupies a LOT of shelf space. Once you've found your way inside it, you (or rather, I) think, "I see why Chad Kassem charges $450 for these things." That's with free shipping but plus tax.

But oh, the music/sound quality. I have a lot of 15 ips 2-track tapes and this is every bit the equal of the very best of them, while looking way better than any of the others. But do looks really matter? I didn't think so but ... yeah. Sue me.

Now, my wife is NOT an audiophile, thinks I play stuff two loud for her liking.Hurts her ears. She was hosting two friends when I got the box. These two do like music but a reel-to-reel tape was totally alien to their world view. After playing "Hoedown" from the album, at a serious volume level, Terry (wife) said "That is the most spectacular thing I ever heard from your system and you can quote me," The other two echoed her.

This was a me-to-me early birthday present. I may or may not buy more of them. But I can safely say that anyone who does will not be disappointed.
