db/watts?

Does anyone remember when High Fidelity magazine was touting using db/watts to rate and compare output power of amplifiers? What is the difference between stating simply in watts as opposed to dB/watts and what would have been the advantage of going that route? I guess that nowadays since numbers are considered meaningless no one really cares.
