98 % of the time, tubed amps use output transformers, and solid state amps don't. I guess that the transformer is resonsible for frequency-dependent phase distortion that affects the stereo image. It would be interesting to compare the stereo image of an output transformerless (OTL) tubed amp with a solid state amp.
