Measuring output voltage from CD, preamp, amps- How to?

I want to confirm all my equipment is outputting the same voltage on both channels. I have :
- Multi-meter
- Stereophile Test CD with 1khz sinewave -20db
I really don't know my way around a meter.
Can anyone tell me what input settings on the multi-meter do I use, and what would a typical reading range be?
I'd like to check my tubed CD player, tubed preamp, and tubed mono amps. Do I have what I need except the knowledge?
