Technical and speculative discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Gain stages. BEWARE!

Assuming you have corrected the Eq for RIAA, I have done several experiments along your lines.

A "gain stage" is the approximate amplification needed to "hand off" from one stage to another. OF course as mentioned, Impedance mating is paramount. Cable capacitance must be in tolerance with the appropriate gain stages.

You will get better dynamics running gain stage one, into gain stage two, into gains stage 3 than if you skip a single gain stage. In studio moniotoring, the dynamics were recorded using inverse gain stages, (Microphone to mic pre, to line pre, (riaa insered here) to Power amp, to cutter head.

It only makes sence to incorporate an equal number of gain stages in playback. Ommitting one gain stage and you are ommitting one level of dynamic amplification.

You playback system shall consist of phono cartridge to Phono pre (one gain stage) then to line preamp (2nd gain stage with RIAA inserted) to Power amplifier..(3rd gain stage) to Loudspeakers.

IF you ommit the gain stage via using a passive preamp...you are only insering an attenuator on the line level...and not using a gain stage...and your bass response and dynamic range will suffer.

I think this was gone over to me in therory and function 25+ years ago.
