Usually a major one. If a speaker has problems with dynamic range adding a linestage often helps subjectively, foir a number of reasons I'd not have the time to discuss now. I personally feel that in order to allow "High Fidelity" reproduction a Speaker must offer a impedance corrected sensitivity in the upper 90db range (say 95 - 100db) at least anyway, this is simple physics. Speaker with lower sensitivity/efficiency will simply start to compress and distort if played anywhere near realistic levels.
