Beware of Timber Nation (audio racks)

To anyone contemplating the purchase of an audio rack from this vendor:

I contracted Chris at Timber Nation last Fall to build me a 4 shelf maple rack. I sent a set of very neat and specific plan drawings to be sure that there was no confusion about what I wanted. he said he could build what I designed (not that far away from what he usually does). I sent him a check, and had to contact him to ever find out if he received it. About 3 months later I received the rack. It was well packed, and the maple was nice, but:

Most of the specified dimensions were off (I don't mean by a 1/16"), holes were drilled off center, too big, and some crooked. One of the shelves (supposed to be 1" thick, but a bit less than 0.9") was warped. The notches in the upright columns for the shelves were sloppy and loose. I talked to him on the phone about these things, and also mentioned that one of the shelf gaps that was supposed to be 5" was actually 4.75". He asked "why do you need 5 inches?" He argued that I should have left enough equipment clearance so that he did not have to meet the 5" spec! he did take it back, and tried to put some shim strips to fix the 4.75" spacing issue, but that left the columns a bit unsightly, and most of the column notches were still loose and sloppy. The warped shelf remained as first delivered. I called again, and he said he would make a rack that did truly meet the plan dimensions I had given him. I sent several follow up e-mails, and never heard anything more from him. AND I NEVER RECEIVED A RECEIPT FOR THE $440 DOLLARS PAID.

He calls himself a quality craftsman maker of audio shelves, with nearly 20 year of experience. I am not a wood worker, but have made things in the past that would have put his crooked holes and cuts to shame.

If you want a hardwood audio shelf that is made right, I suggest that you consider what I have said, and work with a locally know craftsman who DOES produce a product that has better quality.

My money was wasted, and I still can't believe the guy did what he did. My girlfriend saw the results, and just snickered.
