That's an interesting observation, so I got our my copy of Jean Hiraga's "Rörförstärkare" and there wasn't a Japanese amp illustrated that used a choke input filter. So I kept going through the American and European classic circuits. Only one used a choke input filter: a White Powertron from 1953.
I always default to a choke input filter if I have the spare 100V from the PS. Sometimes I find it useful to simply connect or disconnect the first cap to go from a 2A3 to a 300B in using the same power supply.
