Bill,For "normal" home carpeting options, there will be differences from one to another, but compared to the total acoustical environment, they're not significant. First, there is nearly no low frequency absorption, and that's where most rooms have serious problems. Second, you're only carpeting the floor (I assume ;) ), and there are 5 other surfaces in a typical room. So, even though the absorption is pretty high at upper frequencies (for normally incident waves), it's still only 1 surface.
As a result, the type of furniture you put into the room is likely to have more of an effect than the type of carpeting. But I would suggest, just for the sake of maximizing the life of the carpet, get the upgraded pad.
