Yes, carpet is a "fixed variable" - that is a good description! Go ahead, put in whichever you want. Life will be fine, especially if you also include some lower frequency panel absorbers. You mentioned wall hangings. Make them LF absorbers. Read more of Mr. Winer's advice to other people.
