Fireplace as Bass Trap

Ethan and others,
I have a fireplace behind my speakers (CLSz's and Entec LF-20's) that I do not plan to use as long as the system is in the room. I have been thinking of turning it into a bass trap. If I put a RealTrap (might have to be custom made for the dimensions) at the opening of the fireplace will this function as a bass trap? Would it be better to fill the space behind the trap?
Unfortunately, the speakers can not be placed so that the fireplace is in the middle of the speakers (this would put the left speaker too close to the side wall). For this reason, I would not want something reflective in the fireplace as it might have audible effects higher up in frequency.
