"I think a lot of people like Todd who complain about seeing ringing on an impulse response, step response, or square wave mistakenly think that it is an artifact of the imperfect nature of FIR filters."It's an artifact of any brickwall filter, FIR or IIR, digital or analog.... (The only difference is IIR/analog filters have only post-ringing, where symmetical FIR filters have both pre-ringing and post-ringing.)
"In a properly band-limited square wave, the ringing is supposed to be there."
If it's a near-ideal brickwall response characteristic, very true. My point is because of the ringing, a near-ideal brickwall response is not necessarily an optimal characteristic for CD playback. A Lanczos3 filter, for example, has a slight "rolloff" at HF (deviates from the ideal brickwall characteristic) and passes through more "alias" artifacts, but it also rings considerably less than a classic Sinc (brickwall) filter, and I think it puts out a signal that is truer to the pre-digitized waveform.
