As far as I am concerned, a high fidelity sound system's number one priority and its most important one by far is to make the timbre of recordings of musical instruments sound as close to the real instruments as possible. Every other attribute is secondary. This is a very difficult thing to accomplish IMO and is rarely if ever achieved even occasionally by the most expensive sound systems. Insight into this problem happily goes a long way to understanding how to solve many other problems in sound reproduction. There can be a synergy and there isn't necessarily always a tradeoff between solving one problem and another. I would say nearly one hundred percent of the audiophiles I've met could not successfully make use of an equalizer. For them it is a useless and counterproductive toy they quickly tire of and dismiss. For me it is an indespensible tool.
