I currently use the Behringer DEQ2496. When I first tried it, I used the graphic EQ, which has 1/3 octave filters, to attempt to equalize the bass. The result ended up sounding very unnatural, just downright strange, like there were missing bass notes. After playing around with it a bunch, I almost gave up. Then I decided to try the parametric EQ.Each filter in the parametric EQ has variable bandwidth from 1/10 octave to 10 octave. I measured my room response and found peaks of around 10 dB at about 40 Hz and 80 Hz. I set the center frequency and attenuation of a single filter in the parametric EQ to the required values for the 40 Hz peak, and started with the smallest possible bandwidth. This gave less attenuation of the peak than desired. I fixed that by increasing the bandwidth until it visibly affected the response on either side of the peak, then backed off on the bandwidth a bit to prevent that. I repeated this process for the 80 Hz peak.
The result is much, much better subjectively than I got with the graphic EQ. The nice thing about the parametric EQ is the fine adjustment of center frequency and many choices of bandwidth available. With graphic EQ, if the room response peak doesn't match up with the filter center frequency, it won't correct properly. My measurement of the corrected response looked fine in both cases, but the frequency resolution of the spectrum analyzer bar graph display is not very good. I think what was happening was that the poor frequency resolution of the analyzer was covering up problems with the graphic EQ.
The end result is that I'm a happy camper now. I got rid of my bass boom, but still have good bass response. The trick is to just attenuate the room mode peaks and don't try to flatten out anything above about 200 Hz or so.
