Re: What! wind screens only if you eat pot noodles.

In some ways I agree. For instance if the on stage monitor engineer has something destructive going on like badly set eq in the side fills or floor monitors or is using up all the available headroom before feedback thus not allowing me anything clean and ring free for the front of house. But on the systems we use we have tight control of the stage sound and usually have a good look round with the old bruel and kajer before we start. I have had the odd experience of well respected musos that require
a very odd mix in monitors that it would be discourteous not to allow but this is usually confined to the back of the stage and as most horn sections occupy the front this is usually not that big a problem. I have had problems with lead singers that are deaf to kik drum in their floor monitors and seem to require huge level
to phrase in time but that’s rare too among pro bands. I work with some very loud bands from the death metal gendre but mostly they don’t have live brass I could see me micing the bell
with that kind of guitar barrage. I do work with a well known Ska
Punk outfit with a sax and trumpet but the guitar sound is clean to crunch and only gets filthy in solos. Still no problem with micing Tenor Sax band stand style. Give it a go you might be pleasantly surprised. It also tends to put less dents in the screens of your mics as they certainly do not want to bend the key bar stand-offs and don’t seem to mind bending the bell up a bit. Its all about available headroom before feedback/distortion and if you have loads its not a big deal. Also a lot of the stuff I do is live and recording, so it all matters.
Regards Mark
